With strong trade winds and several very brief rain showers (“liquid Aloha”), HSGA held their 2017 U.S. Amateur Qualifier at beautiful Kapolei Golf Club in Kapolei, HI. This was a 36-hole sectional qualifier that tests both the players skill and endurance to make it to the 117th U.S. Amateur Championship at Riviera Country Club on August 14-20, 2017. This will be the first U.S. Amateur Championship and 3rd USGA championship held at Riviera CC. This championship is open to all golfers with a USGA Handicap Index of 2.4 or lower.
The college aged golfers dominated the top 3 spots today and congratulations go to PJ Samiere of Kailua, HI for securing the medalist honors at a well-respected 5-under par, 137. PJ is having a wonderful summer this year as he also just won the 106th California Amateur at the Olympic Club on June 19-24. First alternate was Donny Hopoi at 2 strokes back, 139, and Kyosuke Hara takes the 2nd alternate spot with an even par 142.
Kapolei GC was setup at 6,939 yards Par 71 and a huge MAHALO to the Kapolei GC staff for their support. The golfshop and course maintenance staff were very supportive and wonderful to work with. We also want to thank our HSGA staff and volunteers that made the event run flawlessly.
